Quick Start for WSUS Servers
For IT Pros
This page contains information about WSUS, an on-campus Microsoft patch repository available to IT pros.
WSUS server installation
To install a college or departmental WSUS server on a machine:
- Download the server
installation package. Note that a Microsoft Passport account (Hotmail,
MSN, etc.) is required.
- Run the installation executable. If a warning
box appears stating that the installation can not continue because
IIS 5.0 or later is not installed, then please install IIS as
described below.
- Confirm the following settings:
- [screen] Store update locally: Checked.
- Enter a folder for WSUS to
use (for example, C:\WSUS\).
- [next screen] Install SQL Server desktop engine (Windows) on this computer: Checked.
- Enter
a folder where WMSDE should be installed (again, C:\WSUS is
suggested).
- [next screen] Use
the existing IIS Default Web Site: Checked.
- [next
screen] This
server should inherit the settings…: NOT
checked.
- [last screen] Confirm the settings and click Next to install.
IIS installation (if needed)
To install IIS, for WSUS, on a system running Windows Server 2003 you will need to:
- Click Start->Administrative
Tools->Manage
Your Server.
- [screen] On the “Manage Your Server”
screen, click Add or remove a role beside the
green arrow box.
- Confirm the following settings:
- [screen]
Select Application server.
- [next screen] FrontPage
Server Extension: NOT checked.
Enable SP .NET: NOT checked.
- [last screen] Confirm the settings and click Next to install.
