Quick Start for WSUS Servers

This page contains information about WSUS, an on-campus Microsoft patch repository available to IT pros.

WSUS server installation

To install a college or departmental WSUS server on a machine:

  1. Download the server installation package. Note that a Microsoft Passport account (Hotmail, MSN, etc.) is required.

  2. Run the installation executable. If a warning box appears stating that the installation can not continue because IIS 5.0 or later is not installed, then please install IIS as described below.

  3. Click “Next” and accept the license agreement.
  4. On the "Select Update Source" screen, confirm that the “Store update locally” checkbox is checked and enter a folder for WSUS to use.
  5. On the “Database Options” screen, confirm that the “Install SQL Server desktop engine (Windows) on this computer” is selected and enter a folder where WMSDE should be installed.
  6. On the “Web Site Selection” screen, confirm that the “Use the existion IIS Default Web Site” is selected.
  7. On the “Mirror Update Settings” page, the This server should inherit the settings… checkbox should not be checked.
  8. Confirm the settings and click Next to install.

IIS installation (if needed)

To install IIS, for WSUS, on a system running Windows Server 2003 you will need to:

  1. Click Start->Administrative Tools->Manage Your Server.

  2. On the “Manage Your Server” screen, click Add or remove a role beside the green arrow box.
  3. Click Next on the “Preliminary Steps” screen.
  4. Select Application server on the “Server Role” screen
  5. On the “Application Server Options” screen, confirm that the FrontPage Server Extension and Enable SP .NET are not selected.
  6. Confirm the settings and click Next to install.
