Public Spaces

This page explains how public spaces are defined in UIUCnet Wireless buildings with "public space" wireless coverage.

During the campus network upgrade, many recent UIUCnet Wireless installations provide coverage in "all public spaces" of a building.

A "public space" means an indoor location where students, faculty, and staff can freely gather whether or not they are part of a department.

  • Classrooms and lecture halls
  • Teaching laboratories
  • Student lounges
  • Dining areas
  • Areas with public seating such as an atrium

Areas not defined as "public space" include locations where only a few selected individuals can gather, or where seating and workspace is not intended. These types of areas include:

  • Offices
  • Dorm rooms
  • Private research laboratories
  • Restricted-access conference rooms
  • Most hallways
