A "public space" means an indoor location where students, faculty, and staff can freely gather whether or not they are part of a department.
- Classrooms and lecture halls
- Teaching laboratories
- Student lounges
- Dining areas
- Areas with public seating such as an atrium
Areas not defined as "public space" include locations where only a few selected individuals can gather, or where seating and workspace is not intended. These types of areas include:
- Dorm rooms
- Private research laboratories
- Restricted-access conference rooms
- Most hallways
