VPN Information for IT Professionals

For IT Pros
This page contains information for campus IT pros about the VPN system.

The information on this page is intended to supplement our end-user VPN documentation with information that is of particular interest to IT professionals, such as system and network administrators and technical support providers.

Download and Installation

If you're looking for information on how to install and configure CITES VPN clients on campus users' computers, visit the Download and Installation page and select the operating system you need.

Guest account information for administrators

If your department or unit will be hosting guests to campus, creating short-term network guest accounts is the simplest way to provide them with short-term network access.

For guests who will need longer-term access (more than a month), consider applying for a guest NetID instead. Guest accounts typically expire after 3 days; a NetID can be extended for as long as necessary.

Supporting VPN users

If you're an IT professional who needs to help users connect to the CITES VPN in order to gain access that UIUCnet QuickConnect and off-campus network connections don't provide, the following documents can assist you.

  • VPN Frequently Asked Questions
Dozens of questions, including questions about supported operating systems and specific error messages, are answered here.
  • Firewall ports that the VPN system uses
This page describes how to configure users' personal firewalls and off campus firewalls to allow a connection to the CITES VPN.
  • VPN Networking Diagram (including IP ranges)
If you need to allow CITES VPN-assigned network addresses access to your departmental network resources while blocking network addresses arriving from other subnets, this page illustrates the IP ranges involved.

Related campus network documentation

The campus VPN is used for many purposes: providing secure network connections for wireless network users both on and off campus, providing on-campus IP addresses for off-campus users, and providing authentication for UIUCnet Wireless and Walkup users.

Therefore, the following CITES documentation collections may also be useful to you:
