Sponsoring Short-Term Network Guest Accounts
For IT Pros
This page contains information for campus IT pros and other campus hosts about how to sponsor short-term network guest accounts that can be used with the campus VPN.
If you (or your department) are hosting campus guests, your guests may need Internet access. You can create short-term guest accounts for these users.
These guest accounts will provide access to both the VPN and UIUC QuickConnect, so your guests can choose whether QuickConnect's common but limited functionality will serve their needs or whether they need more complete access with the VPN.
Your guests can also choose between UIUCnet Wireless access from the wireless locations on campus or Ethernet-based Walkup access from the walkup locations on campus.
If your guests need longer-term access (for more than a week), you may wish to create guest NetIDs for them instead.
Who's authorized to create guest accounts?
Any student, faculty, or staff member at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign can create two guest accounts for up to 3 days' duration. Some groups of people are authorized to create larger numbers of guest accounts for longer periods of time. If you need to designate personnel to create more guest accounts or to make them valid for longer times, this page provides contact information.
Creating and distributing guest accounts
This page explains the guest account creation process and additional information that some guests may need. Guests who expect to connect through QuickConnect for simple purposes will need only their guest account name and password; however, guests who need to connect through the VPN will need to be provided with VPN client software and profiles.
Common support questions
Some common support questions include who has primary responsibility for guest support, how to view accidentally lost guest account names or passwords, how long an account lasts before expiring, and how to renew a temporary account.
