Firefly Directions for Internet Explorer
This page contains information about downloading SSN scanning software for your Windows computer using Internet Explorer.
Firefly can help you identify files on your Windows computer that might contain social security numbers or credit cards.
The directions on this page will show you how to install Firefly and use the program to scan your computer
Installing Firefly
1. Go to http://firefly.uiuc.edu in Internet Explorer and click the download button.
2. You might see a security warning that the "publisher could not be verified." If so, click Run.
3. In the Firefly SSN Scanner setup dialog box, click Accept to agree to the End Users License Agreement (EULA).
4. The Firefly installer file will check to see if your computer has necessary software called Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. If it does not, then the software will be automatically downloaded from Microsoft. This process might take 10 minutes or more.
Running a Firefly Scan
1. When Firefly (and Framework 2.0, if your computer did not already have it) finish downloading, Firefly should open automatically. If it does not, go to the Start Button -> All Programs ->CITES Secury and select Firefly SSN Finder.
2. Click the Scan button to begin searching for sensitive information, such as social security numbers or credit card numbers.

3. When Firefly completes, it will list all files with sensitive information. Locate those files and remove the social security numbers or credit card numbers.
