Scanning on Unix and Linux Operating Systems
This page contains information about SSN detection software for Unix/Linux computers.
Users of Unix and Linux are assumed to have the technical expertise to scan for Social Security Numbers (SSNs) more independently. Though CITES does not offer a complete software package for Unix/Linux machines, we do have the following recommendations:
- NEW! A Linux/Unix scanner called SSNiper has been developed by Josh Stone in the Department of Computer Science. For instructions and installation file, go to https://agora.cs.uiuc.edu/x/gylK.
- A Perl script roughly duplicating the functionality of Firefly4Mac can be written using find, xargs, grep, and a good selection of keywords and regular expressions.
- Consider using Samba to mount your Linux drive to a locally attached Windows host and run Firefly over the Samba share.
- If you are scanning a large drive or networked file share, schedule the scan for the weekend to avoid inconveniencing your users or having too many files locked while they are in use.
Please send any questions or suggestions to securitysupport@uiuc.edu so that we may share solutions across the campus community.
