SSL Certificates

For IT Pros
This page contains information about how to get SSL certificates for secure servers.

Introduction

A server certificate is needed to enable SSL operation on your server. To avoid alarming warning dialogues issued by modern browsers, the certificate must be digitally signed by a trusted third party, a Certificate Authority (CA), whose signatures are recognized by the browser. Certificate Authorities will only issue a certificate after taking steps to verify that the requesting party is authorized to use the name that appears in the Organization field of the certificate.

Requests & Renewals

New certificate requests:

As of January 17, 2011, SSL Certificate prices are $38. To request or renew a certificate, visit https://certmgr.cites.illinois.edu.

Expiration and Renewals:

Every week an email reminder is sent out to remind administrators of their certificates that are expiring within 4 weeks. The email address(es) used are the email addresses submitted as the Long Term Contacts for the previous request. Please ensure that the email addresses that are entered in this field are correct and that they accept incoming email (i.e., often Listserv address are restricted). To request or renew a certificate, visit https://certmgr.cites.illinois.edu.

Key Size

As of Monday March 16, 2009 CITES Security is only accepting certificate requests with a minimum key size of 2048 bits.

Certificates For uiuc.edu Domains

At the request of the Office of the Chancellor, as of April 23, 2009 CITES will no longer issue new SSL certificates for hosts in the uiuc.edu domain. Existing sites may continue to request certificate renewals. Exceptions to this policy will be decided by internal escalation on a case by case basis. To request an exception, please email certmgr@illinois.edu with the specific reasons why the exception is being requested.
