SMTP-Secure Configuration for Windows Microsoft Outlook
This page contains SMTP-Secure configuration information for Windows Microsoft Outlook users.
Introduction
This page assumes that you have already configured your email client software to send and receive illinois.edu email, either through Express Email (yournetid@illinois.edu) or through a departmental server (yournetid@department.illinois.edu).
If you have not yet configured your client for illinois.edu email, see the Express Email documentation or your departmental email server's documentation.

Configuration
1. Go to Tools > Options and choose the Mail Setup tab.
2. Click the E-mail Accounts button.

3. Under the E-mail tab, select your account and click the Change... button.

4. Leave most of your configuration as it is, but change the information in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) text box to smtp-secure.illinois.edu (as highlighted in the graphic below).

5. Click the More Settings... button.
6. In the Outgoing Server tab, enter the following:
- Check My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication.
- Select the Log on using button.
- Enter your NetID in the User name box.
- Use your Active Directory password if you choose to enter your password here.

7. In the Advanced tab, change the Outgoing Server items as follows.
- Outgoing server (SMTP): 587
- Use the following type of encrypted connection: TLS

8. Click OK until you've returned to your mail window.
Sending mail
If you are prompted for your password when you send mail, use your Active Directory password.
Note: In most cases, this will be the same as your Express Email password. If you use a departmental mail server – for example, if your email address is yournetid@department.illinois.edu – your Active Directory password may be different from your departmental email password.
