SMTP-Secure Configuration for Mac OS X Apple Mail
This page contains SMTP-Secure configuration information for Mac OS X Apple Mail users.
Introduction
This page assumes that you have already configured your email client software to send and receive illinois.edu email, either through Express Email (yournetid@illinois.edu) or through a departmental server (yournetid@department.illinois.edu).
If you have not yet configured your client for illinois.edu email, see the Express Email documentation or your departmental email server's documentation.
This documentation was written with Apple Mail 2.1.3 on Mac OS X 10.4.11; the steps described below may vary with different versions of the Apple Mail software or the OS X operating system.
Configuration
1. Under the Mail menu, go to Preferences...
2. In the Accounts window that opens, look for the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) area and click the Server Settings button.
3. Enter the following information in the Server Settings window:

- Outgoing mail server: smtp-secure.illinois.edu
- Server port: 587
- Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Checked
- Authentication: Password
- User Name: Your NetID
- Password: Use your Active Directory password.
Note: In most cases, your Active Directory password will be the same as your Express Email password. If you use a departmental mail server – for example, if your email address is yournetid@department.illinois.edu – your Active Directory password may be different from your departmental email password.
4. Click OK.
