Network Infrastructure
This page contains information about service dependencies upon network infrastructure.
Access to many CITES services requires network connectivity and depends on the proper functioning of related facilities. These dependencies include:
- Your computer's local network, which enables your computer to connect to the campus network.
- The campus network, which transmits the information between your local network and the server hosting the service.
- The router that handles traffic between the campus network and the rest of the internet so that you can access non-UIUC webpages or email sent to you from off-campus.
- The Domain Name Service (DNS), which translates hostnames to IP addresses so that your computer knows where to locate the service to which you are connecting.
As you can see from this list, a service can appear to be down when the real problem is a degraded secondary service on which you depend.
