Where to Find Help

This page contains information about where to find help, based upon your University affiliation and the system you are having problems with.

CITES Help Desk

The CITES Help Desk is the primary source for assistance with CITES services and other computing needs. The Help Desk also creates NetIDs, resets NetID passwords, and provisions Express Email accounts. You can contact the Help Desk by phone, email, or walk-in.

For more information, call 244-7000 or email consult@illinois.edu.

CITES OnSite

Through the fee-based service OnSite Consulting, you can request that a computer consultant come to your home or office for technical support with PCs, Macs, and Unix machines. Requests are answered within two business days. Emergency same-day service can be arranged for an additional rate.

For more information, call 333-8628.

CITES Workstation Services Group

CITES Workstation Services Group (WSG) is the primary source of Unix/Linux help for individuals on the UIUC campus. WSG offers yearly system administration contracts, hourly technical support, Unix/Linux and software distribution, as well as hands-on Linux training and a repository of technical documents and freeware for those who prefer to manage their own systems.

For more information, contact cites-wsg@uiuc.edu.

Departmental Services

Departments and units can hire Departmental Services computer consultants to provide complete technical support for their networks, servers, and desktops. Consultants are available by contract on a half-time or full-time basis.

For more information, call 333-2387 or contact them online.

Network Administrator

As a University faculty or staff member, you have a departmental network administrator and/or system administrator who is responsible for your computer's position on the campus network. Some departments give desktop support responsibilities to the network administrators; other departments give responsibilities to a team of system administrators; still other departments refer all security questions to the CITES Help Desk and CITES Security Services.

If you don't know who provides desktop support responsibilities in your department, call the CITES Help Desk at 244-7000 for assistance in identifying your department's IT support services.

Network Administrator (University Residence Halls)

If you live in a University residence hall, there is a team of network technicians (NetTechs) responsible for your system's network connection. The Housing website provides web-based troubleshooting, phone support, and live support. To report a network problem, see http://www.housing.uiuc.edu/technology/help/. For more details and troubleshooting tips, visit http://www.housing.uiuc.edu/technology/URHnet/.

Security

The Security Services group usually works directly with campus technical staff and serves as a security resource for other units within CITES and on the campus. If you are having a security related problem with your computer please contact the CITES Help Desk. For more general information on how to report incidents or whom to report them to see http://www.cites.illinois.edu/security/emergency/reportingmore.html.

Training

Whether you're a seasoned veteran or a computer neophyte, you have to learn somewhere. CITES offers computer training courses covering the full spectrum of topics and skill levels.

CITES Training Services is our primary training organization, offering courses for students, faculty, and staff on everything from basic computer skills to computer programming and even training on university-specific applications.
