About the CITES Antivirus CDs

CITES has two different CDs that can help your Windows computer in two different ways.

The Recovery CD (the Blue CD)
The Recovery CD has a blue label and software that will help you repair an infected computer. If you have a virus or your computer is showing severe symptoms (i.e. won't start up, constantly crashes even after running antivirus software), then the Recovery CD is what you should use to repair your computer.

Software on the Recovery CD includes:

  • LIVE AVCD scanning on bootup
  • Stinger
  • Malwarebytes
  • Recent SuperDAT for McAfee for updating

The Security CD (the Orange CD)
The Security CD has an orange label and contains software to help protect your computer from attacks and malware. It can also configure Windows to help secure your system by turning off unnecessary services and hardening program settings. Use this CD before you have problems with your computer to prevent infections.

Software on the Security CD includes:

  • Norton Antivirus Remover
  • McAfee Antivirus 8.7i suite
  • Firefly Sensitive Data Finder
  • PasswordVault
  • Secunia Personal Software Inspector
  • CITES VPN
  • Secure Shell
  • WinSCP

The Security CD will help:

  • Turn on the Windows Firewall
  • Turn on Windows Automatic Updates
  • Start downloading automatic updates immediately
  • Disable the Windows Guest account
  • Secure Internet Explorer 8 for safe web browsing
  • Show how to require a password when the screen-saver turns on
  • Show how to disable Windows 'Fast User Switching'
  • Show how to display file extensions for all files

How to get the CDs

You can get a copy of either CD from the CITES Help Desk at 1211 DCL. If you have a CD burner or are in a computer lab where the computers have CD burners, you can also download the latest CD image from and burn a CD from a computer which is not virus-infected.

How to use the CDs

The two CDs are used in different ways. Please remember that the Recovery CD is used to save your computer from malware, while the Security CD should be used to protect your computer from future attacks.

To use the Recovery CD (the Blue CD)
To use the Recovery CD, simply place it in your CD drive and then restart your computer. Your computer should end up booting from the CD. Simply follow the instructions on the screen and eject the CD after it has finished. Remember, this process might take a while as the CD is scanning every file on your computer and repairing damaged files.

To use the Security CD (the Orange CD)
Insert the CD after your computer has started. If the CD does not open itself, please start the CD by double clicking on the CD icon under your computer. Once the program has started, you'll be presented with several options for what you'd like to do. Click on any of the options and just follow the on screen instructions.
