New Email Choices for Undergraduates

Beginning August 30, all undergraduate students will be eligible to create Google Apps @ Illinois and/or MS Live @ Illinois accounts. remains the official address for routing University communications to students, faculty, and staff.

Info icon UPDATE: MS Live enrollment is delayed

Due to technical issues with the enrollment process, the roll out of MS Live @ Illinois to undergraduate students has been delayed. We are continuing with the phased-in rollout of Google Apps @ Illinois to these students, as well as their migration off of CITES Express Email.

Starting September 14, 2010, groups of undergraduate students will be notified of their option to create Google Apps @ Illinois accounts and to indicate where they want their email sent. They will have the option to direct their email to either their Google account or a personal email account.

By November 15, 2010, all undergraduate students should have been notified and their migrations completed.

It is expected that the rollout of MS Live will be delayed until mid-year 2011 in order to address the technical issues encountered as well as the feedback received, indicating that students are confused about the relative merits of their email choices.

In May, the University of Illinois Urbana campus began offering Google Apps @ Illinois to first-year freshmen and transfer students. On August 30, a staged rollout begins, making Google Apps @ Illinois and MS Live @ Illinois available to all undergraduate students. Existing undergraduate students with Express Email accounts will have until November 15, 2010, to enroll in the new services and self-migrate their mail on Express to Google, MS Live, or another third-party service.

Graduate and professional students are not eligible for outsourced email at this time. It’s expected that graduate and professional students will be served by the campus Exchange service when it’s available later this year. Until then, they will continue to be provisioned in CITES Express Email.

Undergraduate students who choose to create Google Apps @ Illinois and/or MS Live @ Illinois accounts will have access to email, calendaring, and instant messaging. They will also have the ability to use Google Docs and Sites and/or Microsoft Office Web Apps and Windows Live SkyDrive to collaborate with classmates and store files online. They will have the option to direct their email to either their Google or MS Live accounts or another personal email account.

For all students, faculty, and staff, will remain the official address for routing University communications.

Undergraduate email is being outsourced at the recommendation of the Campus Email and Calendaring Committee. To view the committee’s final report, visit
