Dialup Networking To Retire on July 1, 2009
This page contains information about the retirement of the UIUCnet Dialup and UIUCnet Premier modems in July 2009.
After careful consideration, CITES and the Office of the CIO have decided that it is no longer economically feasible to offer the Urbana campus the ability to dial in to the campus network, UIUCnet. The UIUCnet Dialup and UIUCnet Premier services will be retired as of July 1, 2009.
The costs of supporting the service continue unabated despite the dramatic decline in the number of dialup users over the last few years.
- In 1999, there were 15,000 users who dialed in to the UIUCnet Dialup modems.
- In 2007, there were 3,000 users left.
- By 2008, there were only 1,400 users.
- The 2008 usage shows a greater than 50% drop in use within the course of 1 year, and a greater than 90% drop in use overall.
To begin the process of changing or replacing your UIUCnet Dialup connection, CITES has assembled information about how to choose an Internet Service provider.
- If you want to continue using a dialup-based access service like UIUCnet Dialup, see Dialup ISP Options.
- If you want to change to a higher-speed access service, see High-Speed ISP Options.
(Note that the links to the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) listed are not an endorsement of the mentioned products and services. They are provided simply as a sampling of the options that are available to members of the University community. )
