Be our guest: stay connected while visiting campus with Guestnet
Students, faculty, staff now able to create sponsored accounts for guests to access campus network and the Internet with new Guestnet service.
Guests of students, faculty and staff at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign now have a new way to stay connected while they’re visiting campus: guestnet.uiuc.edu.
Thanks to the newly expanded sponsored guest account service created by CITES, anyone with a valid, working Illinois Network ID can sponsor up to two guests through Guestnet to connect to UIUCnet, the campus-wide computing network.
“Whether they’re coming to visit friends, family, or to see an Illini football or basketball game, campus guests will now be able to get online to check email and surf the web,” said Mike Smeltzer, director of network communications.
Click here to create a sponsored guest account. Guest account sponsors must authenticate using their Network ID and Bluestem password in order to create guest accounts; sponsored guest accounts work for up to three days.
Guest accounts allow the user to connect to the Internet via any one of four major campus network services: UIUCnet Wireless, UIUCnet Quick Connect, UIUCnet Virtual Private Network (VPN), and UIUCnet Walkup services. The fastest and easiest way for a guest user to connect would be to open a web browser window and log in to UIUCnet Quick Connect with their guest account username and password. UIUCnet Quick Connect works either via an Ethernet connection or a Wi-Fi-enabled computer where UIUCnet Wireless service is available. A personal account sponsor takes responsibility for the network activity of his or her guest(s). All sponsors and guests must adhere to the University’s Policy on Appropriate Use of Computers and Network Systems. The CITES Security Office reserves the right to cancel not only a guest user’s account but also the sponsor’s ability to create guest accounts if it determines there are recurring problems with that sponsor’s guest accounts.
