CITES NetFiles Basics

This page explains the basics of using NetFiles from a web browser.

Logging in and out

  1. Open your web browser and go to https://netfiles.uiuc.edu.
  2. Enter your NetID in the Username field and your AD password in the Password field.
  3. Click OK.
  4. Click on the Logout link in the top right corner of the NetFiles interface when you are ready to exit NetFiles.

Your Files

NetFiles allows you to organize your files by grouping them into folders. In addition to containing files, folders can also have additional folders for organziation. You can view the contents of any folder by clicking on the linked name of the directory. To return to the previous folder, click on the blue Up arrow or Back buttons in the NetFiles navigation bar.

When your account is created, you automatically have the following folders:

Note that the shared and www folders are set up to allow anyone to see the contents of these folders. You can change these permissions so that only certain people can view these folders or turn off shared access completely. (See Sharing Files for more information.) You can also create new folders (see Creating New Folders) that are private.

Your Quota

You can view your account's quota by clicking on the Setup link in the toolbar at the top of the page. Your quota will be listed at the bottom of your account information as Storage Quota.
