Systems Management Group

Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) is seeking a Manager for the Systems Management Group.  The Manager is responsible for the day-to-day management and direction of the group that administers production Windows and UNIX systems in support of centrally provided campus services, storage and backup infrastructure, contract UNIX services, and the UIUC Active Directory service.  This position supervises a large group of collegial, creative and talented IT professionals, and reports to the Assistant Director, Systems and Technology Services Division.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the group delivers a highly reliable and scalable environment for CITES production UNIX and Windows systems, the UIUC Active Directory, and CITES storage/backup infrastructure
  • Manage cost-recovery operations to ensure financial viability
  • Define goals and direction of the group and effectively communicate goals / direction to the staff
  • Maintain a team-oriented and innovative environment
  • Provide staff with appropriate training opportunities to succeed in their work and promote professional development
  • Perform various personnel actions including, but not limited to, hiring, formal and informal performance appraisals, promotions, mentoring, and disciplinary actions
  • Promote good customer service, lead by example in all interactions with internal and external customers, and deploy group strategies that define services and manage customer expectations
  • Maintain subsidy and cost-recovery budgets for the group
  • Ensure that group plans are aligned with organizational goals and objectives
  • Participate in long-term and strategic planning for the group
  • Provide timely status reports and updates to upper management, as appropriate

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and 5+ years experience in Windows and/or UNIX system administration
  • Experience managing / leading teams of IT professionals, particularly system administrators
  • Demonstrated planning and budgeting experience
  • Knowledge of current and emerging computing technologies
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills
  • Excellent customer service skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with enterprise-class systems, SANs and / or services in a 24x7 production environment
  • Possess strong project and process management skills or experience managing large / enterprise projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels
  • Familiarity with an academic computing environment, particularly on a large campus
