Configuring Eudora 6.2 (Mac) to Access CITES Express Email via POP
This page contains information about configuring Eudora (Mac) to access CITES Express Email via the POP email protocol.
Eudora is scheduled to become open-source software on October 31, 2007, and will no longer be supported by the vendor, Qualcomm.
The instructions on these pages should be applicable for Eudora 6 and 7. However, after October 31, the CITES Help Desk will no longer provide Eudora support beyond basic troubleshooting, as described in the Help Desk's Level 2 support definition.
The instructions on this web page will help you configure Eudora 6.2 to access your CITES Express Email account through POP. For information about POP, see Choosing How to Access Your CITES Express Email Account.
All current faculty, staff, and students can obtain Eudora at no charge from University of Illinois WebStore.
1. Open Eudora. If this is your first time you have opened Eudora, the New Account Wizard will open. Click Cancel.
2. Click on Eudora on the Eudora Menu Bar.
3. Select Preferences.

4. The Settings window will appear. Click on the Getting Started icon on the left pane. Fill in the following information:
User Name: Enter your NetID in lowercase letters.
Mail Server: Enter express.cites.uiuc.edu.
Real Name: Enter your first and last name, or the name that you want your correspondents to see when they receive email from you.
SMTP Server: Enter express-smtp.cites.uiuc.edu only if you are on the campus network. If you are connecting from a third-party Internet Service Provider (ISP), you must enter the name of its outgoing mail server. Examples of third-party ISPs are Insight, Ameritech, Soltec, and Sky Networks, among many others. Contact your ISP if you do not know the name of its outgoing mail server.Email Address: Enter your email address in this form: netid@uiuc.edu. Replace netid with your NetID, which can usually be found on your I-Card or in your Electronic Directory entry.
(optional) Make Eudora the default Mailer: If you plan to use Eudora as your primary email program, you can check this box.

5. Click on the Checking Mail icon in the left pane of the Settings window. Fill in the following information:

Mail Server: If the box was not automatically filled in, enter express.cites.uiuc.edu.
Mail Protocol: Select POP.

Save password: If you would prefer that Eudora stores your CITES Express Email password so that you can automatically log in, then check the Save password box. (Note: this is not recommended for those who share the computer with others.)
Check for mail every (blank) minutes: Enter 10.
(optional) Leave on server for (blank) days: You can choose to leave a copy of your messages on the server for a certain number of days by checking the box next to Leave Mail on Server and entering the number of days that you would like the email stored. Temporarily storing a copy of your email on the server is useful if you check your email from two locations or want to have a backup of your recent messages.
(optional) Delete from server when emptied from trash: You can also choose to have copies removed from the server after you have discarded the originals in Eudora. To set this option, check the box next to Delete from server when emptied from trash.
(optional) Skip messages over (blank) K in size: If you don't want to download emails over a certain size (in kilobytes) to your computer, then enter a number for the maximum allowed size and check the box next to Skip messages over (blank) K in size. This option is useful for people who check their email from a dialup connection at home and don't want to wait for large messages to download. (Tip: You can use the Express Email web interface to view any large messages you have.)
