Creating Assessments

Illinois Compass provides a powerful assessment tool that allows instructors to create graded assessments, anonymous surveys, and self tests.

To access the Assessments tool, select the Build tab, and under Course Tools select Assessments.

To create a new assessment, click on Create Assessment.

Give the assessment a Title and Description, and decide whether or not to make the assessment Visible to students.

The title of your assessment will automatically appear as a column in the Grade Book. Under "Grade Book column name" you can change the name of the assessment to appear differently in the Grade Book.

Select the Assessment Type: Quiz, Survey, or Self Test.

Templates allow you to base an assessment on an exiting assessment. You can also set specific
Goals
for the assessment.

Once finished, click on Save or Save and Add Questions if you wish to add questions to the assessment.

Adding Questions to Assessments

From the Assessments main screen, select the assessment that you want to add questions to. Click on Create Questions.

The dropdown box that appears shows the type of questions you can create: Calculated, Combination, Fill in the Blank, Jumbled Sentence, Matching, Multiple Choice, Paragraph, Short Answer, True False.

Making Assessments Available

From the Assessment main screen, click on the gray arrow next to the assessment name.

Select Show Item to make the assessment available to students.
Note: The assessment needs to have at least one question before it can be made visible to students.
