50% Training Specialist / 50% Computer-Assisted Instructional Specialist Position

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks an experienced and creative individual for a regular, full-time (12-month) position as a 50% Training Specialist and 50% Computer-Assisted Instructional Specialist for the Educational Technologies division of Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES).  This staff position entails providing classroom instruction, support, and consultation and one-on-one consulting to faculty, staff and students on the use of computer base communication, information delivery systems and instructional applications, particularly Illinois Compass.  In addition, the position will require consulting with faculty to assist them with pedagogy and design issues entailed in using technology in their teaching.

Primary Responsibilities, 50% Training Specialist:

  • Developing, scheduling, and delivering workshops and presentations on the use of the campus learning management system (Illinois Compass) and other instructional technologies.
  • Assessing and improving effectiveness of workshops and presentations
  • Evaluating, authoring and improving existing web-based training documentation and tutorials
  • Serving as an instructional support person for Illinois Compass users
  • Collaborating with other staff on various training projects
  • Other duties as assigned.

Primary Responsibilities, 50% Computer-Assisted Instructional Specialist:

  • Meeting with faculty and instructors to discuss their instructional goals and enhance on-line course materials
  • Assisting faculty and instructors who are experienced with technology but need help reengineering their course to make their implementation more effective and better take advantage of the technology
  • Demonstrating to faculty and instructors who are new to using technology the available tools for putting courses on-line.
  • Providing guidance and consulting in setting up, using, and managing on-line courses
  • Assisting faculty and instructors in evaluating the effectiveness of on-line course material
  • Providing ongoing feedback & assistance to faculty and instructors for further enhancements of on-line courses
  • Evaluating new instructional software and technologies for their possible application to UIUC courses
  • Working with internal and external campus support providers to provide superior customer service to instructors

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years relevant work experience or advanced degree in the use of computer based instructional materials.
  • Classroom teaching/public speaking experience.
  • Significant experience with web-based course development & course management software.
  • In-depth knowledge of standard Internet information delivery systems and communications tools (World Wide Web, FTP, email, etc.).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with faculty and staff.
  • Desire to independently learn new software.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree.
  • Experience with online learning software such as Mallard, Blackboard, WebCT, and/or streaming audio and video (REAL, QuickTime, etc.).
  • Coursework in instructional design.
  • WebCT Vista Trainer certification.
  • Experience generating and editing images.
  • Desire to acquire new skills and stay current with rapidly changing technology.
  • Familiarity with project management methods and procedures.

Salary:

The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
