Research Programmer, Service Manager Position

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) seeks an experienced and creative individual for a regular full-time (12-month) position as a Research Programmer, Service Manager for the Educational Technologies Division of Campus Information Technologies and Educational Services (CITES).  This staff position will provide support for educational technologies applications, server and application administration, and desktop support for the EdTech Division and labs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Planning and ongoing management of ed tech services such as WebBoard, Mallard, multimedia support (Helix), and the implementation of any new services.
  • Provide server administration, product support, and administration of educational technology applications used by faculty.
  • Liaison with vendors to resolve support issues as necessary.
  • Serve as a resource for departmental management of staff workstations and faculty training labs.
  • Collaborate with programming staff to implement and deliver services.
  • Collaborate with consulting staff to troubleshoot user issues and to evaluate ways to streamline, enhance, and improve the ed tech service offerings.
  • Participate in CITES and campus-wide technical initiatives and committees to represent educational technology interests and needs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and two years relevant work experience.
  • Experience managing software applications on UNIX or Windows NT/2000 systems (commercial, open source, or custom developed software applications).
  • Programming experience in a language such as Perl, C, C++, JAVA, Visual Basic or Shell Scripts.
  • Familiarity with SQL and database management.
  • Experience providing support and troubleshooting for Windows and Mac workstations.
  • Good communication and customer service skills and the ability to work in a collaborative environment.
  • Strong desire and motivation to learn and stay current with new and changing technologies.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience administering online learning software such as Mallard, Blackboard, WebCT, and/or streaming audio and video (REAL, QuickTime, etc.).
  • Project management experience including managing the life cycle of applications.
  • Web development including CGI and/or PHP experience.
  • Familiarity with Oracle.
  • Familiarity with computer networking concepts and network devices.
  • Desire to acquire new skills and stay current with rapidly changing technology.

The salary will be competitive and commensurate with experience.
