Mac OS 9 Dialup Quick Start
This page contains information about configuring your Mac OS 9 computer to make a modem connection to UIUCnet Dialup.
University-provided dialup networking is no longer available.
The UIUCnet Dialup and UIUCnet Premier services were retired on July 1, 2009. For network access alternatives, see our pages on replacement dialup networking options or high-speed networking options.
What you'll need to know
Some things you'll need to know to configure your machine for dialup access include:
- Do you know your Network ID and Network ID password?
You use your NetID and NetID password to connect to UIUCnet Premier and/or UIUCnet Dialup. For more information about your NetID, see Your Network ID.
- Has your modem been installed yet?
Under Apple-> Control Panels-> Modem, check for any identified modems. Apple provides a guide to understanding which option to select at http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106650
- Which service are you using?
You'll need to choose which phone number you dial based on which dialup service you're using.Dialup numbers for UIUC modem pools:
239-7252Premier subscribers only333-3700All authorized users244-4976All users, 15 minutes per call
On campus users: If you’re calling from on campus, add a 9 before the telephone number.
Quick configuration
To configure your computer to connect to UIUCnet Premier or UIUCnet Dialup:
- Under the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then Remote Access.
- In the window which appears, complete the blanks shown with the following information:
Registered User: If this is your own machine, make sure this option is selected. (Guest users can create temporary dialup accounts.)
Account Name: Enter your Network ID.
Password: (CITES recommends leaving this stored entry blank and typing your password at the time when you connect.)
Number: 239-7252 (or your chosen modem number)
Close the Remote Access panel, and save the changes when prompted.
With this information completed, you're ready to connect for the first time. (If you experience any problems in connecting, you can also add the DNS information in the TCP/IP panel.)
Dialing in
To connect to the network, first make sure your modem's phone cable is connected at both ends.
Under the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then Remote Access.
Enter your Network ID password and click Connect.
The Status line in the Internet Connect window will display messages about the connection process; if you connect successfully, the last message will be "Connected." You will also see the IP address which has been assigned to your computer for this session. From this point you can run a Web browser, check email, or anything else that requires an active Internet connection.
More information
If you have any difficulty connecting to the network using this quick-start process, use the more detailed installation process (including specifying DNS server addresses).
