Entering Campus

This page contains information about setting up passwords and creating accounts when you enter campus.

For general information about being new to the University, see New to Campus.

If you are entering the Urbana campus, you will be granted access to email and other network services at different times depending on your status at the campus (student, faculty, staff, visitor, etc).

Note: Keep in mind that violations of University policies regarding computing access may result in the immediate deactivation of your account.

Incoming Freshmen, Transfer Students, and Graduate Students

First: Claim your NetID and set your NetID password.

Once you have been officially admitted to the University of Illinois, you can go through the process of claiming your NetID and setting up your NetID password even if you have not yet formally accepted admission.

To view your financial aid award letter, you will need to claim your NetID.

This can be done without accepting your offer of admission; however, you will be unable to apply for housing or sign up for a summer registration date until you have officially accepted the offer.

To claim your NetID, you need your Admit ID and your University Identification Number (UIN). This is located on the back of your Notice of Admission letter (included in the Admitted Student Guide packet) or, for graduate students, in the email sent to you by your department.

Next visit the following link to claim your NetID: https://netidclaim.illinois.edu/

Next: Set your Active Directory password and other Urbana campus passwords.

After you've claimed your NetID and set your NetID password, you can set most of your Urbana campus passwords at the CITES Password Manager. Your Active Directory (AD), ICS lab, and other campus passwords can be set to match your NetID password.

You must set your Active Directory password with the CITES Password Manager before continuing on to your Enterprise ID password.

Next: Set your Enterprise ID and Enterprise ID password.

Once you have set your NetID and Active Directory passwords, you can set your Enterprise ID and password. Your Enterprise ID allows you to use University applications such as Banner Self-Service and to access information such as your Housing assignment.

To set your Enterprise ID and password, visit the University of Illinois Enterprise IDs and Applications page.

Note: You may be able to set your NetID password and your Enterprise ID password to be identical. To learn more about selecting passwords, visit the Guide to Passwords page.

Next, set up where you want your official University email to be sent.

Undergraduate students only: Choose your email destination

You will automatically have an email alias created for you in the form of yournetid@illinois.edu.

Official University email will be sent to this email alias.

You can either create a new Google Apps @ Illinois account, or redirect yournetid@illinois.edu to send email to an email account you already have.

If you choose to create a Google Apps account, you will have the ability to use online tools like Google Docs and Sites to collaborate with classmates or store assignments online.

Visit https://partnercomputing.illinois.edu to make your email selection.

To learn more about Google Apps @ Illinois, visit the Guide to Google Apps @ Illinois.

Graduate students only: Create an Exchange email and calendaring account

Because graduate students frequently handle sensitive data (including students' grades) that can't be sent outside University systems, an on-campus Exchange email and calendaring account is needed for your professional work.

If you haven't yet set your Active Directory password, you should do so before creating your Exchange account. To set your AD password, go to the CITES Password Manager and select "Log in with your NetID and password." You will be asked to enter your NetID and NetID password, and you will then be presented with a list of CITES passwords you can change. You are also able to set most of your CITES accounts to use the same password in the CITES Password Manager.

Next, you will be able to create your Exchange account at the Partner Computing site.

Your Exchange account is your official Illinois email account, so you are advised to check it frequently throughout your time at Illinois.

At this point, you'll have access to campus resources and network services.

Once you've completed the steps above (NetID and password, Urbana campus passwords including Active Directory password, Enterprise passwords, and campus email), you'll receive access to campus resources, including:

Faculty and staff

Visiting faculty and staff

If you are visiting the Urbana-Champaign campus for fewer than thirty days, you can have the person or department sponsoring your visit arrange for a guest account that will provide you with network access. For information on guest accounts for visitors to campus, visit the Short-term Network Guest Accounts and VPN Access page.

If you will be visiting the campus for longer than thirty days, you are encouraged to have a sponsored account, known as a Guest Network ID (NetID). For more information about Guest NetIDs, visit the Information for Long-Term Guests page.

For information on hosting guest accounts for short-term visitors to campus, visit the Sponsoring Short-Term Network Guest Accounts page.

For information on hosting a Guest NetID for a visitor to campus staying longer than thirty days, visit the Requesting a Guest NetID page.

Faculty and Staff

First: Claim your NetID and set your NetID password.

As a staff or faculty member, there are two ways you may obtain your NetID and set your NetID password:

  1. Your department will provide you with a NESSIE "new hire" login and password to access the NESSIE New Hire website. Within the NESSIE "new hire" section, you can request a NetID and select a NetID password.
  2. If you do not select a NetID or NetID password in NESSIE, you will need to visit the CITES Help Desk in person to claim one. Call 217-244-7000 or email consult@illinois.edu to set up an appointment. You will need to bring a photo ID with you. The Help Desk will assign a NetID to you and will assist you to set your NetID password.

If you will be using an Enterprise ID and password regularly in your position, you are encouraged to set it up soon after setting up your NetID and NetID password. To set up your Enterprise ID and password, visit the University of Illinois' Enterprise Application Login page.

Note: You may be able to set your NetID password and your Enterprise ID password to be identical. To learn more about selecting passwords, visit the Guide to Passwords page.

Next, create an Exchange email and calendaring account

Because faculty, staff, and graduate students frequently handle sensitive data that can't be sent outside University systems, an on-campus Exchange email and calendaring account is needed for your professional work.

(For those who go through the Nessie New Hire process, this step can be managed as part of that process. For those who don't go through Nessie New Hire, you'll need to complete this step separately.)
